Salmon Poet is a poetic journey, an ode to Nature through the voice of the poet Walt Curtis and the vision of filmmaker Sabrina Guitart. This artistic and ecological film evokes the spiritual journey of the salmon through the Oregon landscape. Nature, shamanism, and the return of the salmon to reproduce and regenerate the ecosystem are the themes of the film. Salmon Poet honors Mother Earth, but also the Voice of the Poet, who speaks a message of ecological alarm and offers his poetic meditations on the Earth itself.
Salmon Poet is a collaboration between a poet and a fimmaker who both love Oregon and Nature. Both believe in the interaction of humans with the landscape and seek a return to a love and respect for the Earth .This film was made on the following Northwest Rivers: the Columbia, Eagle Creek, Clackamas, Klickitat, Deschutes, White River and the Molalla. Dog Mountain and the Portland urban landscape are featured.Poetic beauty is revealed through our journey on Mother Earth in which the mystery inspires us. Federico Garcia Lorca, the martyred poet, said:
"Solo el misterio nos hace vivir."
Only the mystery allows us to live.
We, poets and ethical beings,
sound the Alarm!
THE PRISTINE CONDITIONS OF MILLIONS OF YEARS OF EVOLUTION ARE ABOUT TO BE EXTINGUISHED. THE NATURAL WORLD IS DOOMED. LIFE ITSELF, THE MANY OTHER SPECIES ARE THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION. THE BIOSPHERE ITSELF IS IN DANGER! TECHNOLOGY AND THE ANIMAL MAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESECRATION OF THE PLANET!
(We humans are the problem, and we humans must do something about it. We pollute, ravage, exhaust, consume, and excrete poisons and garbage everywhere. We must change the way in which we live and limit our numbers.)
Ten years ago, Sabrina Guitart met “Portland’s Unofficial Poet Laureate” Walt Curtis while honouring Spanish poets Federico Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda. Since then, they have been performing poetry together. Walt Curtis has had for 30 years a poetry radio show in Portland, OR called ´The talking Eart”`on KBOO Portland Community Radio.
She saw Curtis’ art and knew him as a poet. Their friendship grew through their mutual love for Nature and Poetry.
Years later, they both decided to collaborate on an artistic-ecological film which would examine how the Oregon landscape has inspired his work as a poet and painter.
At the time, his Native American-inspired paintings on wood and rock –“ Native Spirits” – was at the Mark Woolley Gallery. Both Guitart and Curtis have spent a lot of time in the Oregon outdoors.
- Nature, shamanism, and Salmon spawning to regenerate the ecosystem are central themes of the film ´Salmon-Poet`.
Walt Curtis has said: “ I would only do a film with this young woman
from another culture. Only a film about nature and saving the planet.
I’ve worked with Penny Allen on “Property”, Gus Van Sant on “Mala
Noche”, and Bill Plympton on “ Peckerneck Poet.” Sabrina inspires me.
She is my Muse. Together we will honour Mother Earth each contributing
in his or her own way to the monumental topic.”
